Dengue Glossary

Ovitraps

Ovitraps are small black deposits filled with water and an attractant, simulating a perfect environment for the breeding of Aedes, known as the dengue mosquito. Rectangular Eucatex straws are placed in it, a rough substrate to receive mosquito eggs. They are installed outside houses by surveillance agents to determine the number of mosquitoes in the region. Due to its characteristic of oviposition in jumps, the dengue mosquito lays small quantities of eggs in different locations, making the ovitrap a likely target.

Positive trap

Positive traps are ovitraps containing straws with dengue mosquito eggs. Having a positive ovitrap means that there is a possible breeding site nearby as the dengue mosquito does not usually fly far from where it was born.

IMO

Average Egg Index. Total eggs found divided by the number of traps recovered. The higher the average number of eggs per trap, the higher the dengue mosquito density.

IDO

Egg Density Index. Total eggs collected divided by the number of positive traps. The greater the number of eggs per positive trap, the greater the density of the dengue mosquito.

IPO

Ovitraps Positivity Index. Total positive ovitraps divided X 100 divided by the number of traps. The higher the positivity rate, the more places within the municipality are infested with Aedes.
